a brief history...

Carole came to Sarasota from Chicago’s north shore, where she was a Professor of Theatre at Oakton Community College and taught a wide range of theatre courses including: Beginning Acting, Intermediate Acting, Directing, Introduction to Theatre, Dramatic Literature, Theatre History, Public Speaking and Honors Speech. She coordinated special acting programs and was the lead director for the Performing Arts Center mainstage productions.

In Sarasota she was honored to serve as the Director of Education and Outreach for the prestigious Asolo Rep. Subsequently she became the Artistic Director for the Banyan Theatre, and Associate Artistic Director of PLATO arts. During this time she continued to work as a freelance director, coach private students, and serve as dramaturg for playwrights developing new works.

In her previous life “up North” she was the Vice President of Programming and Community Relations for Cablenet, at the time the largest cable TV company serving the Chicago suburbs, and was the Executive Producer of a series of innovative live interactive cable television specials. She has owned her own theatrical production company, producing and directing musicals, which toured throughout the Midwest.

Carole holds a B.A. in Theatre from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of Miami and has done advanced degree work in theatre at UCLA, and in Adult Education at Lewis University in Evanston Illinois.  Over the years she has participated in ongoing workshops and classes, including master classes in acting, directing, improvisational theater, and stage makeup.

Freelance Director

Carole has had a wide range of success directing dramas, comedies,  and musicals. She is known as an actors director, guiding actors to discovering the organic truth of their characters. She is patient, caring, insightful, and creative, drawing inspired performances from actors.  Carole’s broad range of experience in theater helps her to collaborate effectively with the entire tech team, ultimately presenting polished productions that thrill audiences and actors alike.

Dramaturg and Script Midwife

Dramaturge and script doctor for playwrights working on new plays. Carole has an impeccable track record of success, working with playwrights locally and nationally. Playwrights she has worked with have had professional readings in NYC, Alabama and Sarasota, and several have won well regarded playwriting competitions. Carole also produced a highly regarded new play series for the Banyan Theater Company.

Plato  – Associate Artistic Director

PLATO: Professional Learning and Theatrical Organization, a non-profit theater company which primarily supported theater-centered education and outreach activities. Responsible for all education and outreach programs including workshops, classes, discussions, internships, and partnerships with community organizations. Conferred with Artistic Director on all artistic decisions.

Private Coach/Acting & Audition Coach

Carole is a well respected theater educator, teaching master classes for actors, private coaching for professional and community theater actors and opera singers, as well as audition preparation. She also develops and facilitates seminars, workshops on public speaking, and private coaching on communication skills for politicians, private organizations, academics and businesspersons.

Asolo Repertory Theatre – Director of Education and Outreach

As the Asolo Repertory Theatre Education and Outreach Director, Carole was instrumental in developing a world class education department, which included the Asolo’s Access to the Arts program for students, teacher training workshops, exciting theatre classes, workshops and programs for adults. She helped to shape the growth and direction of Kaleidoscope, the groundbreaking Musical Theatre Workshop for teens and adults with developmental disabilities offered in partnership with Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities (CHAC). She instituted the Spotlight audience information newsletter, and developed the Shake-n-Bake Shakespeare program which has area high school students excited about reading and performing Shakespeare’s plays.

Banyan Theater Company – Artistic Director

In her position as the Banyan Theater Company Artistic Director, Carole was responsible for all artistic decisions for one of the most prestigious theater companies in Sarasota. The Banyan is a professional theater producing a summer season of dramas and comedies of “literary merit” and excellence. Her duties include selection of plays, directors, actors and artistic personnel, as well as education and outreach activities in the community. She contributed to the vision and direction of the theater, participated in development and public relations activities, and served as a liaison to the board.
